What have Reception been up to?

Our weekly Working Together sessions with parents continue to be well attended. The children really enjoy the opportunity to learn with their parents.

The children have been enjoying some yoga sessions with Michael on a Wednesday. They have been learning how to show good sitting, played the umbrella game and shown that they can listen and hold positions.

Welcome to the start of the summer term. Our topic for this half term is 'In the Garden', we will be looking at minibeasts and plants over the next few weeks.

We have read the story about the hungry caterpillar and also Snail Trail. These have inspired the children to create butterflies and make snail puppets in their child initiated play.

We took our learning into the woods and went on a caterpillar hunt, some of them were well camouflaged and others easily found. We turned our caterpillars into butterflies using natural materials. The children showed great concentration and creativity when doing this. Most remembered that butterfly wings have a symmetrical pattern.

It was lovely to so many of our parents turn up to join their children for our sponsored scavenger hunt. The weather was dry and sunny and all enjoyed exploring our grounds and trying some of the activities that the children do. We raised about £150, which will go towards new equipment in our gardens. Thank you for your support.

World Book day was a great success, considering the snowy weather. All the children looked great and we had some very original ideas. Our theme for the day was 'Monkey Puzzle', a book by Julia Donaldson. The children created some great monkeys for our jungle themed book corner.

The role play area became a vets this week and the children have been very caring towards the injured animals.

Welcome back to the Spring term

We have started our week with a look at the Chinese New Year celebrations. The children have been finding out if they were born in the year of the dragon or snake.

One of our parents kindly made some Chinese egg roll biscuits for us to taste. They were yummy and very crumbly. She also delighted the children with a Chinese tradition of giving red envelopes called lai see. These are usually given by family members to children and contain money, in our case chocolate money. A big thank you from the children, they loved them.

The children have continued to enjoy our topic on Space and I have been amazed how much information they are remembering.

Do you know what planet is the closest to the sun?

Do you know which planet is the coldest?

Do you know what planet we live on?

Ask your child.

Spring term 2018

Our topic this term has been Space. The children have been finding out about life on space and in a rocket. They have created their own rockets using 2D and 3D shapes. In literacy, they have been writing about what they would do if they met an alien. Great fun was had painting aliens.

Last week during our outdoor learning session, the children decorated bags that could be used as a kite. They then had to work together with their partner to tie a knot. This did result in a few of them becoming tied up! Once everyone had made their kite we got ourselves ready to go and fly them.

The children found that when they held the kites up high they flew better and also it depended on the direction of the wind.

Welcome to the Reception class. Children have settled in well during their first two weeks. Here are some photos of them in action!
