Welcome to our Year 5 Page
What have Year 5 been up to?
In P.E. we have been perfecting our ball control and passing skills in football.
On Tuesday 18th June, year 5 visited The River Lee Country Park. We walked from the River Lee Navigation River (Cheshunt), past the old meandering River Lea to the Seventy Acres Lake at Fishers Green. On route we observed and compared the features of each river and identified some of the waterbirds. The children drew field sketches and used a impeller to measure the river flow. At Fishers Green, the children viewed the wildlife and birds from a bird hide. It also provided some welcome shelter from the rain.
It may have been a short half term but even so year 5 have done lots of learning. Have a scroll down and have a look at some of the things we've been up to.
In topic we have been looking at how life in Britain has changed through the decades. The children researched the 1960's artist Andy Warhol and recreated some of their own versions of his work.
The children have enjoyed reading two quite different books( Mr.Stink and The Secret Garden) and responded well to both of them.
We have looked at characterisation, and learnt how to convey character through dialogue.
In science, we have been dissecting flowers and studying the male and female parts. Do you know if a flower has more male or female parts? Ask your child.
Fractions and decimal number line fun.
Year 5 have been super busy writing over the past few weeks. The children particularly enjoyed watching a short animation called "Alma," which was about a strange dolls shop. We recreated the freaky shop window and presented some of our writing in it. Each child signed the board (as in the animation) and tentatively waited... Luckily, no one transformed into a doll.

STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) week was a great success. Children got to carry out a range of investigations and experiments and learnt a plethora of new things. Year 5 took part in a coding workshop organised by Setpoint which involved designing a code to protect a precious diamond being stolen from a vault. It was great fun.
It has been great to see so many of you at working together mornings. These will now be held on alternate Thursdays.
We have been looking at a range of
explanation texts and spotting important
Well it has been a fabulous couple of weeks getting to know Year 5 and they are a great bunch. We have been looking closely at Arthurian Legends, and next week we will start to plan and write our own. In the children's planners, on page 100, there is a list of 3 & 4 and 5&6 words that children should aim to be able to read and spell. Please encourage your child to look at these words regularly and maybe put into sentences.
In maths, we have been looking at place value and the magnitude of one million. It is so important that children know the value of a digit, depends on its place in the number. For example, what is the value of the 6 in the number 1,678.932?
Next Wednesday 19th September, we will be holding a working together morning, please come along if you can so I can get to know you all a bit better. From then on working together mornings will be every other Wednesday .
Roald Dahl Day 2018
It was great to see so many of year 5 dress up for Roald Dahl day. There were some really fantastic home made costumes and the make-up was incredible and very realistic.
Year 5 looked at the book "The Witches," and we are now all experts in how to recognise a witch.
In maths, we have been looking at negative numbers in a range of contexts.
