Exploring Sculpture Through Outdoor Inspiration!

As part of our Art unit on sculpture and in celebration of Outdoor Classroom Day Year 3 took to the school grounds for a creative exploration session. The children spent time sketching interesting shapes, patterns and colours from around our outdoor spaces, including the playground, tyres, trees, and other unique features of our environment.

These sketches will serve as inspiration for a collaborative sculpture project that will reflect our school community. It was a wonderful opportunity to combine art with nature, observation and imagination!

Year 3 are Cooking Up a Storm!

Over the next six weeks, Year 3 will be getting hands-on in the kitchen as part of an exciting cooking project. Each week, the children will try out a new recipe that links closely with our learning in English—where we’re focusing on writing clear, step-by-step instructions—and PSHE, where we’re exploring healthy eating.

So far, we’ve made tasty pizza wraps and delicious cereal bars, with plenty of mixing, slicing, and baking along the way. Of course, the highlight for many has been getting to eat their creations! The children are thoroughly enjoying the experience and can’t wait to see what they’ll be making next.

Why not try recreating some of our recipes at home?

Year 3 Explore the Water Cycle!

This week, Year 3 have been busy learning all about the water cycle! We explored how water moves through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection, using fun hands-on activities to bring the process to life.

Our budding geographers created water cycles in a bag, watching as water evaporated and condensed just like in nature. Others designed fantastic paper plate water cycles, using cotton wool for clouds and arrows to show how water travels. For an extra challenge, some children made comic strips, following a water droplet’s journey through the cycle.

Take a look at their amazing work below! Who knew geography could be so creative?

Year 3 Investigate Rocks!

In Science, Year 3 have been learning about different types of rocks and how they are formed. To explore this, they used Starburst sweets to model the three types of rocks—sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. By cutting, pressing, and heating the sweets, they discovered how rocks change over time. This fun, hands-on investigation helped them understand rock formation in a creative way. It was a fantastic way to bring Science to life!

This term, Year 3 have been developing their sewing skills in Design and Technology. They have been learning how to use running stitch, whip stitch, and backstitch to create their own fabric projects. Through careful practice, they have built confidence in threading needles, tying knots, and stitching with precision. It’s been fantastic to see their creativity and perseverance.

Year 3 Explore the World of Magnetism!

This week, Year 3 have been investigating magnetic and non-magnetic materials as part of their science topic. Armed with magnets, the children explored a variety of items to see which ones would attract. It was full of surprises. “Did you know a tin can is magnetic? The children were amazed as they made predictions, tested their ideas, and discovered which materials contained magnetic properties. This hands-on exploration sparked curiosity and wonder, and the class can’t wait to keep experimenting!

The children looked very festive in their jolly jumpers on Thursday and were excited to create their Christmas display for the dining hall

In DT, we have been investigating techniques for making simple pneumatic systems.

Year 3 were thrilled to be starting Forest School. They tracked different animals by investigating their poo (plasticine).   Children also enjoyed climbing rope bridges and getting creative in the mud kitchen.

In English this week, we started to look at Instructional Text.

The children worked in groups to identify the layout and grammar features of instructions and as a class we put together a success criteria for an effective set of instructions. Over the next few weeks, the children will put these elements together to produce their own set of instructions.

The children have been working hard on their coding skills in computing.  They have written their own algorithms to create outcomes.

In science, year 3 have been identifying different skeleton types and how they are used for support, protection and movement. We have also sorted animal skeletons into groups, discussing patterns and similarities and differences.
